Speaking Team

Comprised of professional volunteer members of BLFS who are passionate about, and available for you to schedule speaking to seniors, their families, care-givers and other providers to the needs of seniors. There are two presentations available:

I. Empathy For Elders:

We walk the participants down memory lane to experience the gift of aging. This is primarily focused towards professional Care-Givers or family members. As a result of taking this "walk", we have see people's passions reignited for their role in caring for the elderly. (See more detail below)

II. Shedding Light on Senior Myths (Minimum 25 attendees)

Presented with 5-6 professionals from diverse fields of expertise that will introduce you to "Miss Daisy", will highlight some of the more common myths seen in each industry, and will help the attendees learn that sometimes their next door neighbor may not be the best person to seek advice from. This group will introduce you to reliable resources within Polk County. (See more detail below)

Empathy for Elders Seminar

The Education Committee is a group of BLFS member volunteers passionate about helping the seniors of Polk County. Our premier seminar, "Empathy for Elders,"  is an interactive and educational presentation. It offers the participants the opportunity to learn about:

  • The aging process
  • Ailments that come along with aging
  • Tips on how to better assist this generation
  • How to be a better caregiver
  • How to provide a better quality of life for our older generation

The Education Committee has presented to hundreds of students, health care professionals, family caregivers, health care facility team members, hospice volunteers, and many more. The presentation can be customized to present to any audience in any length of time. We can share a short 10-minute "This is one thing you can do today to make a difference" or our complete 1-hour interactive presentation.

Conferences & Health Fairs

BLFS participates in various health fairs and programs throughout the year offering member information and promoting the coalition.

Guest Speakers at Monthly Meetings

Possibly one of the best sources of information are at our monthly meetings where a variety of speakers are invited to share items of interest to seniors and professional service providers. Monthly meetings are on the 3rd Wednesday of each month at various member locations. A free breakfast is included. See the home page and the events calendar for information on General Membership Meetings and other events.  

Community Outreach

The community outreach committee is always looking for ways to get resources in the hands of those who need them. These resources for the community are

• BLFS Website offers a provider search page which includes information and access to all of our coalition members. You can search by business category, business name, contact name or keyword. We also provide a plethora of resource referrals, educational articles, etc. that will benefit our members and that will benefit community visitors to our site.
• BLFS Membership directory printed in Polk ElderCare Guide .
• Empathy for Elders, which is an interactive and educational community presentation. It offers the participants the opportunity to learn about, the aging process, ailments that come along with aging, tips on how to better assist this generation, how to be a better caregiver, and how to provide a better quality of life for our older generation. • Shedding Light on Senior Myths is the newest BLFS community seminar which helps to correct much of the misinformation out there on a number of topics related to senior healthcare, finance, business, and legal. It's presented by experts that deal with these areas on a daily basis. This is a 40-45 minutes presentation with 15-20 minutes for questions (Total time 1 hour) For more information on how you can schedule this seminar for your facility or organization, please contact our education committee chair.

• BLFS has sponsored and co-sponsored a number of educational seminars including a collaborative effort with Lakeland Regional Medical Center to offer "LIFE CARE" seminars to the community dealing with advanced directives, guardianship, geriatric care management, elder law, etc. 

• BLFS has co-sponsored conferences, most recently in support of the Alzheimer's Association in presenting a community conference on Alzheimer's and related Dementia. In 2011 hundreds gathered for this event which included speakers from the community and universities as well as the many vendors offering their services.
• Health Fairs are also part of our community involvement throughout the year offering member information and promoting the coalition.

• BLFS also takes grant applications for BLFS Gives Back as funds become available. Recent recipients include Impact Ministries, Faith in Action, FUMC Tuesday Tigers and Memory Bridges.

• BLFS sponsors community projects related to seniors.

We are always interested in new ways to serve you and our Polk County communities. We are available to come and speak to your retirement communities, civic organizations, churches or Assisted Living Facilities to share what we do and of course we are always looking to expand our membership network. Help us spread the word about what BLFS has to offer.
